CAN Spotlight: Payslie’s Pals Cornhole Tournament Brings Community Together for FAST Research

Three photos from Payslie's Pals Cornhole Tournament

This summer, Payslie’s Pals turned a local park into something extraordinary: a place where family, friends, and neighbors came together to support Angelman syndrome research while celebrating the joy and resilience of one remarkable little girl, Payslie.

Now in its 4th year, the fundraiser has become a cherished community tradition. What began as the hope of raising a couple thousand dollars has grown into so much more. Each year, the event gets bigger, showing just how truly amazing and committed the community is.

The day featured a spirited cornhole tournament, raffle baskets, a silent auction, delicious food, and a bake sale. Thanks to the dedication of Payslie’s family and their community, the event raised over $15,000, with nearly $12,000 to fund Angelman syndrome research through FAST

FAST is deeply grateful to everyone who made the day a success. From the Berndt family who poured their hearts into organizing, to the neighbors who showed up with raffle prizes, bake sale treats, and competitive cornhole spirit, each act of generosity is part of the momentum driving research forward.

For Payslie’s mom, Jena, the reason behind the fundraiser is simple yet powerful:  “I fundraise because I want people to better understand how amazing my daughter is. I choose FAST because I believe in their mission and truly believe they are going to help make sure my daughter gets her chance to tell the community that stood behind her all these years.”

Payslie was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome in 2021 after months of searching for answers. For her family, that moment marked the beginning of a new journey, one filled with challenges, but also determination to fuel research and hope for her future.

The event wouldn’t have been possible without strong community involvement. Jena shared: “I always have people reach out who don’t even directly know us just to offer their support. The community shows up in unexpected ways and continues to help come up with new ideas to make the next event even better.”

The Berndt family also offered encouragement to other families who may be considering hosting their own event:

“Take the leap. If you are on the fence, just know you have way more support than you think. Communities really show up when you least expect it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. No fundraiser is too small or too silly to implement. You got this, and you can make a difference in ways you never expected, just like our kids do for us.”

With every bag tossed and every dollar raised, Payslie’s Pals showed how much impact one community can make. Their dedication honors Payslie, uplifts families everywhere, and brings us all closer to a cure.
