Dream Big

Help Fund Research to
Cure Angelman Syndrome

Why Fundraise?

The Cure Angelman Now (CAN) fundraising initiative is an annual program for the community to help raise critical funds to support FAST’s mission. This year’s theme is “Dream Big” to reflect our motto for 2023, and the hope driving all of our efforts. Every donation made to a CAN fundraising campaign helps fund our strategic Roadmap to a Cure 2.0 to get us closer towards a meaningful therapeutic for all individuals living with Angelman syndrome.

Funds raised by the community will support research and advancements that bring life-changing treatments to our loved ones with Angelman syndrome. FAST will not stop until every individual living with Angelman syndrome, regardless of age or genotype receives a meaningful and effective treatment.

START FundraisingTake action today and become a CAN Fundraiser!

We understand that asking for money is not always easy, and everyone’s experience with fundraising is different. A great way to get started is by creating your own campaign page, which can make things feel both fun and personal. You can also start brainstorming event ideas that you think would resonate with your specific friends and family. Just don’t be intimidated or nervous! We are here if you need help with any of it. Email us at fundraising@cureangelman.org and we’ll help get you started.

Community Fundraising Activities

We are amazed at how creative our community can be!

In previous years, we have seen events such as golf tournaments, Easter egg hunts, cook-offs, cornhole tournaments, block parties, even frozen turkey bowling (who knew that was a thing?!) Other ideas we’ve seen are pampered chef parties, selling products, swim-a-thons and social media fundraisers.

Check out the events calendar to see if there is an event in your area you’d like to attend, volunteer at, and/or share with others.

If you are hosting an event in 2023, please submit an event form. By filling out this form, you can request rights to use assets such as the FAST logo as well as understand if FAST can provide additional support to make it a successful event. Reach out to fundraising@cureangelman.org if you have any questions.

Our 2023 CAN Goal

In 2022, our CAN fundraisers raised $959,749 and we know we can do more this year. That is why we have set a goal of raising $1,000,000 through CAN fundraising in 2023.

Please consider hosting a fundraising activity, contributing to one, and/or spreading the word about FAST and Angelman syndrome. The more people know, the greater the impact!

Fundraising Tools

Your easiest first donation will come from you. Decide what amount you would like to contribute (no amount is too small), and leave a special comment to your loved one with AS on your CAN page. Remember, it is easier to ask others if you have already sponsored yourself.

You and your family are the most powerful reason why someone would contribute to FAST. Donors are motivated by a passion for a cause or compassion for people they have come to know.

Share why donating will make finding a cure possible. FAST’s scientists know exactly what causes Angelman syndrome. They have cured the symptoms of the disorder in mice using multiple strategies. A cure is no longer a matter of if, but when. To bring meaningful treatments and therapeutics into human clinical trials, we need the support of our family members and friends to help us raise $1 million.

You can’t raise money if you don’t ask. Everyday people make substantial change, and every dollar counts. Start by making a list of the people, employers, businesses and organizations you know, and discover whether they wish to contribute in some way or not. Don’t get discouraged if they are tied to another commitment, it happens.

When you make an ask, be direct. Direct them to your CAN page URL or the FAST website so that they know how to contribute.

Be direct and suggest an amount. People are more likely to give when they know what is expected of them and don’t be afraid of asking too much, they will self adjust. You will find that many people want to help you. When asking for donations, be relaxed. Show your enthusiasm and be authentic. You’ll do best with the style of solicitation that reflects your personality.

Remember to thank your donors, and then take that opportunity to give them more information. If you send a card, tell them of the progress your loved one is making, or of any news on the AS research front, and then direct them to the FAST website and Facebook page again so they can follow FAST’s progress themselves.

We’re bringing life-changing treatments to people with Angelman syndrome so they can speak, walk, sleep, and live seizure-free. It’s a mammoth task that will require like-sized efforts. Continue. If something worked well, do it again and improve upon it. If something did not come off as you had hoped, try something else. You have a compelling reason for perseverance, and people will understand that. Use your passion to spark that in the people around you. You will be amazed.

One of the smartest ways to increase your donation to FAST is through a Corporate Matching Gift Program. Many companies, and some individuals, will match your donation dollar for dollar, which doubles your charitable donation power. Some match even more. Johnson & Johnson, for example, matches 2:1 and Grainger contributes 3:1.

You can find a list of companies with matching gift programs here. If you don’t see your employer on the list, check with your company’s Human Resources office to see if they offer gift matching. If they don’t, ask them to start one.

To add FAST to their list of charities, have your Human Resources office contact FAST via phone (630.852.FAST), fax (630.852.3270) or email (info@CureAngelman.org). FAST is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

We are here to support you and cheer you on. Thank you for not being a bystander in the journey to cure AS. You have opportunities to win prizes and incentives through our CAN Campaign, see the CAN Rules on this page. Also, we look forward to celebrating you at the annual FAST Summit & Gala.

2023 CAN Rules

2023 Cure Angelman Now Contest and Sweepstakes Official Rules

PLEASE READ THESE OFFICIAL RULES IN THEIR ENTIRETY.

These are the official rules of the contest and sweepstakes (“Rules”). Please be aware that due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, adjustments may need to be made closer to the event date.

The Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (“FAST”) has established a promotion to bolster interest and creativity in the area of fundraising which includes a contest (the “Fundraising Contest”) and sweepstakes. The Fundraising Contest is an international fundraising campaign to show support for Angelman syndrome research and to raise money for FAST USA, a nonprofit organization that provides funding for Angelman syndrome research. The Fundraising Contest is a challenge in which the top eight (8) entrants that raise the most money for FAST will receive a prize as described below. In addition, two (2) entrants will be randomly selected to receive a prize as described below (“Sweepstakes”). The Fundraising Contest period will run from 01/01/2023 to 10/31/2023 at 11:59PM EST (“Contest Period”).

Other international FAST entities are also participating in the Cure Angelman Now (CAN) campaign in their respective countries and with their own fundraising platforms. They are not participating in this Fundraising Contest nor are funds raised on the international FAST fundraising platforms eligible for this contest or the prize eligibility herein.

NO DONATION OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND OR CREATION OF A FUNDRAISING PAGE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN THE SWEEPSTAKES.

RULES

To enter the Fundraising Contest, a fundraising page must be established by an individual (“Entrant”) on the FAST website located at www.cureangelmannow.org (“Website”) to raise donations for FAST. Donations will be made directly to FAST through the Entrant’s fundraising page on the Website or via offline donation designated to benefit the Entrant’s fundraiser. Teams or groups must identify one Entrant within the team or group . By establishing a fundraising page, the Entrant accepts these FAST Fundraising Official Rules.

ELIGIBILITY:

Legal residents of the fifty (50) states of the United States of America and the District of Columbia and most countries around the world who are at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of entry are eligible to enter the contest and sweepstakes. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. Residents of countries on the United States list of embargoed countries and countries where local laws prohibit entry into sweepstakes or contests or limit the prize value that a resident may accept are not eligible to enter. Employees and board members of FAST, all affiliates of FAST (including international FAST affiliate organizations), the prize providers, and members of their immediate families may create campaign pages but are not eligible to win any prizes; they will however be recognized for their hard work and contributions. FAST, in its sole and absolute discretion, shall make all determinations with respect to the eligibility of all Entrants.

The Fundraising Contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

HOW TO ENTER:

To enter the Fundraising Contest, Entrant must establish a web page by following the instructions on the Website for the purpose of raising donations to FAST or submit an entry card as described below. To be an Entrant in the Fundraising Contest, the fundraising page must be created during the Contest Period. By creating a page, Entrant agrees to these Official Rules and warrants eligibility to enter the Fundraising Contest.

Alternate Method of Entry for Fundraising Sweepstakes: Mail a postcard or 3” x 5” index card with name, mailing address, and daytime telephone number, postmarked by October 15, 2023, to: FAST Sweepstakes, P.O. Box 40307, Austin, TX 78704. Each person may submit one (1) entry. FAST assumes no responsibility for lost, late, or incomplete entries.

Entries may be disqualified at any time for non-compliance with these Official Rules. FAST, in its sole and absolute discretion, makes the final determination as to eligibility.

PRIZES and Approximate Prize Value:

Each grand prize winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to a location within the United States to meet with a top FAST-funded researcher and be a guest of honor at a dinner with FAST board members and other families! The approximate prize value of each grand prize is $2,500.

WINNERS and NOTIFICATION:

The Prize winners will be identified as follows:

Contest: Eight (8) Entrants who raise the most money (in compliance with these Rules) as verified by the total shown on the Entrant’s fundraising page by October 31, 2023 at 11:59PM EST will be winners. CAN pages will remain open until December 31, 2023 but only those totals as of October 31, 2023 will qualify for the Fundraising Contest.

Collectively, all ten (10) winners shall be referred to as Prizewinners.

All Prizewinners will be notified by phone call or email by no later than November 15, 2023 and must respond via email within seven (7) days from notification or FAST reserves the right to choose an alternate Prizewinner. The Prizewinners will be announced no later than December 1, 2023, on the FAST website.

Box 40307, Austin, TX 78704.

Fundraising Gifts

The following gifts will be awarded for the indicated amounts raised by each Entrant. For clarity, Entrants shall be entitled to one gift only (for example, an Entrant raising $20,000 would be entitled to the iPad, or could opt for a gift card, but would not receive both):

$1,000 – $20 Starbucks or Amazon gift card and FAST-branded gifts (APV $30)

$5,000 – $100 Starbucks or Amazon gift card and FAST-branded gifts (APV $110).

$10,000 – $200 Amazon or Uber Eats gift card and FAST-branded gifts (APV $210).

$20,000 – iPad or one hour, personal meeting with an Angelman expert and FAST-branded gifts (APV $500).

An Entrant who is eligible for a Gift must sign a release as described herein.

Selection of Gifts and Prizes:

Except as set forth herein, all such selections shall be final and binding on the Entrant. If an Entrant fails to make such selection with such timeframe, FAST may choose which prize or Gift to grant to such Entrant or may receive no prize at all in its sole discretion. An Entrant may waive his/her right to receive a prize or Gift. Any Entrant who accepts a prize or Gift will be issued an IRS Form 1099, if applicable. Under no circumstances will FAST be required to pay the APV for any prize or Gift to any Entrant.

Prizes and Gifts are non-transferrable, non-exchangeable, and non-refundable, and must be accepted by the Entrant as awarded. FAST reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to substitute a prize or Gift for one of equal or greater value if any designated prize or Gift should become unavailable for any reason, including specifically unavailability due to any public health regulations or restrictions.

SWEEPSTAKES ODDS OF WINNING:

The odds of winning a Prize in the Fundraising Sweepstakes depend on the number of eligible Entrants received during the Contest Period. Raising money for CAN will not increase your chances of winning the Sweepstakes.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES; INDEMNIFICATION; RELEASE:

Each Entrant who accepts any prize or Gift will sign a release which (1) grants FAST permission to use his/her name, voice and likeness on all FAST advertising and promotional materials and for publicity purposes, in any form of media, including but not limited to the Website, Facebook, and Twitter and (2) releases, indemnifies, defends, and holds harmless FAST and its affiliates, including promotional sponsors, from any action, liability, claims, costs, injuries, losses, damages of any kind or proceedings arising out of or in conjunction with your participation in the Fundraising Contest, the use of the Internet or FAST’s website, the acceptance, or possession or use of the Prize awarded or any part thereof, as well as claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy. All federal, state, and local taxes and all other costs and expenses associated with acceptance and use of any prize or Gift are the Entrant’s sole responsibility. Entrant shall also indemnify, defend, and hold FAST and its promotion sponsors harmless from any losses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from any third-party action asserting a breach by you of any representation, warranty, or obligation in these Official Rules.

Entrant represents and warrants that: (a) he/she is eligible to enter the Fundraising Contest; (b) he/she has complied and will comply with these Official Rules in connection with participation in the Fundraising Contest and the Entry complies with all of the requirements of all sections.

By participating in this Fundraising Contest, Entrant agrees to be bound by these Rules.

FAST reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any Entrant it finds to be attempting to tamper with or undermine the entry process and/or the legitimate operation of the Fundraising Contest, or to act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner or with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other person or acts in such a manner that is detrimental to FAST.

The Fundraising Contest is governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of Illinois without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules, and Entrant consents to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the federal, state, and local courts located in Cook County, Illinois in connection with any claim, dispute, action, or proceeding arising from or related to the Fundraising Contest.

Entrant hereby waives any rights to a trial by jury in any matter arising from or pertaining to participation in the Fundraising Contest.

Further, in any such dispute, under no circumstances will Entrants be permitted to obtain awards for, and each participant hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental, or consequential damages, including attorneys’ fees, and participants further waive all rights to have damages multiplied or increased.

Entrant agrees to release all rights to bring any claim, action or proceeding against the FAST, further covenants not to sue FAST, and hereby acknowledges that FAST has not made nor is in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation, or guarantee – express or implied, in fact or in law – relative to the Fundraising Contest or the Prize.

IF YOU ARE A CALIFORNIA RESIDENT, YOU WAIVE ANY AND ALL RIGHTS UNDER SECTION 1542 OF THE CIVIL CODE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, WHICH PROVIDES AS FOLLOWS: “A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS THAT THE CREDITOR OR RELEASING PARTY DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS OR HER FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE AND THAT, IF KNOWN BY HIM OR HER, WOULD HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS OR HER SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR OR RELEASED PARTY.” You expressly waive and release any right or benefit which you have or may have under Section 1542 of the Civil Code of the State of California, to the full extent that you may waive all such rights and benefits pertaining to the matters released here. In connection with such waiver and relinquishment, you acknowledge that you are aware that you may hereafter discover claims presently unknown or unsuspected, or facts in addition to or different from those which you now know or believe to be true, with respect to the matters released herein; nevertheless, it is your intention through this release to fully and finally and forever settle and release all such matters and claims relative thereto, which do not exist, may exist, or heretofore have existed between yourself and FAST or FAST’s promotion sponsors. The release herein given shall be and remain in effect as a full and complete release of such claims and matters notwithstanding the discovery or existence of any such additional or different claims or facts relative thereto.

PRIZE CHANGES:

FAST reserves the right to change the grand prize if FAST is unable to host or attend, respectively, the grand prize. FAST shall notify the applicable winners as soon as possible and allow such winners to select alternate prizes, subject to availability.

INTERNET:

If for any reason the Fundraising Contest is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, fraud, technical failures, or any other cause beyond the control of FAST that corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Fundraising Contest, FAST reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Fundraising Contest. FAST assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. FAST is not responsible for electronic transmissions or entries that are lost, late, stolen, incomplete, illegible, damaged, garbled, destroyed or misdirected, or for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or telephone lines; computer online systems, servers, or providers; computer equipment or software; failure of any entry to be received by FAST on account of technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Website, or any combination thereof; or for any injury or damage to your or any other person’s computer relating to or resulting from Entrant’s participation in or the downloading, accessing, or processing of any materials or information in the Fundraising Contest.
